Some interesting sand patters at the Mendenhall Estuary.

Slack Tide in the Mendenhall Estuary. The gentle morning light and the stillness of the waters creates a nice effect. The prints in the sand are likely from a dog, but river otters live out here too. November 14th, 2010.

Being There. The light on the trail leading out to the Mendenhall Game Refuge along the river seemed just right to give the impression of being there. Captured November 17th 2010.

The receding tide has left the grass in a tidal channel lying flat. This is looking Northwest into the Mendenhall Estuary. August 20th, 2010.

It's interesting to find patterns where different borders meet. In this case one type of grass (or sedge) has turned color well before another. You can see Islands of the green variety in the distance. Taken in the Mendenhall Game Refuge, August 20th, 2010.

June is the true month of Green in Southeast Alaska, with even the grass near the sea still green. By mid July some of this grass will have dried and turned color. June 8, 2010.

It's possible that I have a few too many grass photos from the Mendenhall Game Refuge, but I like the endless variety, and how the colors contrast with the heavy, slightly blue cloud cover we often have. October 24th, 2009.

On the edge of Sunny Point is a great place for shore birds, but I also love the way these little grass clumps look in the water as the tide moves in and out. It's a quiet place, despite being near the airport and not far from town. July 26th, 2009.

In July you can really notice the color of the grass start to change, as with this photo of the Mendenhall Game Refuge. It's quite beautiful, and probably our best "fall colors" even though true fall is still far away. July 16th, 2009.

The stark contrast between the trees, grass and sky struck me in this photo. The land mass is know as the Mendenhall Peninsula. On the other side is Fritz Cove, and at the tip, a beautiful, undeveloped trail. August 13th, 2008.
